Today we went to MD Anderson hoping for the best but expecting the worst. The "fellow" comes in first and talks to us and takes all of David's vitals. Then she says "the chemo worked but you will have to have another round." shock of actually hearing that hit hard. Then she leaves us in the room to go find the Dr.....the big dog who calls the shots. Dr. Cortes comes in and tells us that the chemo took the 16% blasts and brought them down to 6% (5% is remission). So then he looks at Davids blood counts, all which are climbing and improving. Dr. Cortes then continues that he is very happy with the counts and thinks 6% is good enough to move ahead with the transplant. He makes a call to the transplant Dr. then tells us that if there is a donor the process would need to take place within the next three weeks. He does not want the blasts to start growing back. If there is no donor then round 2 of chemo will proceed to keep the blasts number down. Dr. Cortes wants to wait a week to see how much davids counts improve. So Thursday May 24th we will either hear that we are moving forward with the transplant or moving on to round 2 of chemo. This was a small step in the right direction.
